Understanding Purpose in Life

Many individuals express a desire for external achievements—wealth, recognition, relationships—but at the core, what we truly seek is a sense of purpose. Over the past year, I've been reflecting on the necessary changes to align my life with this purpose, gradually implementing them. While I haven't fully arrived at my desired destination, having guiding "rules" fosters intentional living and propels me toward my aspirations.

  1. Identify and Prioritize Your Purpose

We inherently yearn for a purpose, often without realizing it. If you fail to define your own purpose, external factors will impose one on you. As Tim Denning wisely states, "Build your dream or build someone else's dream." For two decades, I pursued endeavors for recognition and success but ended up in situations where I exerted significant effort for minimal reward. I hesitated to focus on my passion for writing, instead becoming bogged down in others' problems. While these experiences were enriching, recognizing when to transition is vital. Many of us become preoccupied with trivial tasks, squandering our time instead of channeling our energy into more significant objectives. Tim Ferriss aptly describes this as hunting field mice instead of antelope.

  1. Establish and Reassess Your Goals

Knowing your direction prevents you from feeling lost. Once you've pinpointed your purpose, it's essential to set both short-term and long-term goals to embody that purpose. Break these into actionable steps, craft a plan, and proceed.

For instance, in 2019, I aimed to compete in an international adult figure skating event. My goal was to skate flawlessly in both routines and, ideally, to podium. I devised a supportive strategy, training for hours daily, adhering to my nutrition plan, and focusing intently on the event. Despite a mere six weeks of earnest preparation, I earned a gold medal and nearly reached the podium in another event. The key was a well-defined plan that led me to manifest my desired outcome. Therefore, establish SMART goals, monitor your progress, and adjust as necessary.

  1. Commit to Lifelong Learning

Growth halts when learning ceases. This is why highly successful individuals prioritize reading and expanding their knowledge—it's how they generate innovative ideas that enhance their lives and enterprises. Learning should continue beyond formal education. Dedicate a few minutes daily to read, acquire new skills, or engage in enlightening conversations.

  1. Choose Kindness Over Niceness

One of my mother's favorite sayings is, "Don't mistake kind for foolish." Being nice often equates to allowing others to exploit you, embodying a form of people-pleasing. When labeled as nice, it often indicates that others can easily manipulate you. In contrast, kindness involves genuinely caring for others while maintaining personal boundaries. Be a good person, not just someone who acts like one.

  1. Pursue Flow States

Engaging in flow states accelerates growth. When immersed in such states, you naturally seek more significant challenges to enhance your mastery. My flow states emerge while skating, walking, and writing. How can you access yours? Identify activities that induce flow in your daily routine and witness the improvement in your life.

  1. Create Daily

The remedy for boredom is creativity. Humans are inherently creators, a trait often overshadowed by industrialization. If you find yourself feeling low, engaging in creative activities can help reconnect you with yourself and a greater purpose. Even if you don't consider yourself particularly creative, allocate time each day for activities you are drawn to—whether it be drawing, writing, or crafting.

  1. Recognize When to Rest

Our culture glorifies relentless hustle, but knowing when to pause is crucial. I learned this lesson painfully after an injury; instead of resting, I stubbornly pushed on, believing I could manage a 14-mile bike ride. Prioritize rest now to return stronger later.

  1. Simplify Your Life

Many of us are overwhelmed by excess. An abundance of choices can lead to decision paralysis. For example, I have over 100 pens, yet only need one at a time. Simplifying your possessions and daily choices can alleviate stress and free up energy for what truly matters.

  1. Live in the Present

Don't postpone living fully until circumstances improve. Recently, I have made a conscious effort to immerse myself in the present moment. I realized how often I dwell on the past or obsess over the future, neglecting to embrace the now. As Ferris Bueller famously noted, "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

  1. Embrace Discomfort

We often shy away from discomfort, yet it is a catalyst for growth. Stepping outside your comfort zone reveals your capabilities. While discomfort shouldn't be constant, tolerating it can lead to significant personal development. My experiences in CrossFit taught me that I could achieve more than I believed.

Discomfort can manifest in various forms—whether it's tackling a long-neglected task, having a difficult conversation, or practicing delayed gratification. Life is characterized by contrasts; joy cannot exist without pain, nor can happiness without sorrow.

By willingly facing challenges, you bolster your self-esteem and resilience. Challenge yourself to embrace a little discomfort today and observe the long-term benefits it brings.
