The Sensibility Behind Common Sense: A Political Perspective
Written on
I have mentioned this before and will likely do so again: common sense holds significant value, rooted in a series of probabilistic outcomes. Consider the old adage, "Those who live by the sword will die by the sword." Individuals who wield swords may face numerous encounters, but eventually, an unusual probability may surface, leading to a loss in such confrontations. This idea embodies the essence of common sense. It suggests that while fate may not always penalize foolishness, it invariably punishes those who repeat their errors. It’s simply a matter of straightforward reasoning.
It astonishes me that politicians frequently serve as prime examples of these common sense principles. Take, for instance, the individual down in Florida, whether his name is Rod or Ron. A few months back, he was viewed as a potential candidate for higher office, yet he seemed to lack common sense in how he drew attention to himself as a right-leaning provocateur attempting to outdo others in outrageousness. However, it appears that this individual has a history of pushing Florida laws for his personal gain, restricting the freedom of expression and actions of others—actions that, naturally, are likely to offend many.
Mr. Di De Da, in a misguided attempt to assert his power, took aim at Mickey Mouse. It is plain as day that attacking a beloved cartoon character, especially one that advocates for respect, is not a winning strategy. I struggle to see this incident as an instance of being "woke"; it seems rather a demonstration of folly. Mickey is entitled to express his views without causing harm. It’s a matter of common sense. After all, Mickey Mouse is the cornerstone of the Magic Kingdom. Would anyone believe that the Magic Kingdom could maintain its allure if it enforced stringent tests for visitors' wokeness?
Imagine if we concocted a conspiracy theory to highlight the absurdity of this entire situation. Wouldn’t that be entertaining? If that Georgia politician can spin one, so can we. What if we claimed that the CDC, tipped off by Dr. Fauci, discovered a wild African virus that induces wokeness in humans? The terrifying aspect of this virus is that it spreads through telepathy. If one were to hear a "woke" thought just once, it would invade their mind until they became fully "woke," a state often referred to as being aware. Our Governor has been in contact with numerous ANTIFA members who exhibit wokeness, and tragically, Mr. Di De Da has become a victim, exposed at a pizza parlor in Washington D.C. The so-called Deep State, fearing that he might become "woke" during a term, finds itself unable to secure him the presidency as they once hoped. Thankfully, a bit of common sense reveals that none of this is feasible. Viruses cannot be transmitted telepathically, nor can the Oval Office be bought. Moreover, the Deep State would never allow such information to leak, making this entire theory a fabrication.
This issue of common sense appears to define the current GOP, as sometimes their moral compass blinds them to reason. Does anyone genuinely believe there won't be a backlash against these Republican inquisitors? Historically, punishing women for simply being women has been a favored tactic for men in power, but it has consistently ended in the same manner: women suffer until they unite and push back. They seem to forget that women once fought for the right to vote, banding together to flex their political power, leading to prohibition—a concept that, while seemingly sensible at the time, was ultimately impractical. People enjoy drinking; prohibiting it was a misguided notion, yet it appeared logical then. If a woman’s husband comes home drunk and violent every night after visiting the bar, it’s not unreasonable for her to wish to restrict his alcohol access.
Prohibition serves as a classic example of common sense that was recognized only after the fact. However, some common sense matters should never be postponed. I suspect that a certain famous hotel in Florida may lack such sensibility. It seems unlikely that a privileged youth from New York would grasp the implications of taking confidential mementos from the White House, especially when advised against it by lawyers. Engaging in such behavior signals a distinct ignorance of basic common sense.
What continues to astound me is the complete absence of common sense displayed by certain political figures. For instance, Sarah Huckabee appears trapped in a futile act, while Greg Abbott struggles to keep the lights on in Texas. Idaho has seemingly lost touch with reality. Common sense should tell ranchers that they can erect fences, but if a cow desires to visit a neighboring ranch, it will find a way, regardless of those barriers. Yet, many individuals are trying their utmost to imitate the antics of former President Trump. Some even discuss burning down barns for insurance claims, as the Freedom Caucus contemplated defaulting on national debt. It's doubtful insurance would cover such a disaster, but these individuals clearly lack common sense.
Reflecting on the members of the Freedom Caucus—Jimmy Jordan, Louie Gohmert, Mark Meadows, Scott Perry, and the infamous Marjorie Taylor Greene—one must question their long-term political viability. While some may perceive them as potential political stalwarts, it is crucial to consider whether those supporters are the same individuals advocating for arming children with guns while simultaneously opposing their exposure to literature deemed too complex for their understanding, labeling it as "woke." I fail to comprehend how listening to a drag queen, which might amuse a child, is considered more perilous than an angry young man armed with an AR-15. That angry young man poses a far greater threat to children's safety than any drag queen. Remember: common sense is key.
