Embracing the Present: Unlocking the Cycle of Now
Written on
Chapter 1: Understanding the Present Moment
To truly grasp the present, it’s vital to comprehend that it is not merely a fleeting instant but rather a continuous cycle. When we think of being present, we often envision stillness—sitting cross-legged, hands resting on knees, forming a circle with thumb and index finger, a subtle smile, relaxed jaw, and closed eyes.
Calming the mind is a beneficial practice for embracing the present, yet it represents only a fraction of what being present truly entails. Living in the now means accepting life as it unfolds—embracing all its facets, from joy and happiness to frustration and sadness. Each experience is a gift, and it’s up to us how we choose to respond. We can share our feelings with others or keep them to ourselves. We have the power to transform fear into excitement and frustration into motivation for change.
Life presents us with events that evoke various emotions within us. How we choose to manage, utilize, and transform these feelings reflects our freedom and our ability to alter our lives. The present moment is far more expansive than we often realize.
Section 1.1: The Misconception of the Present
Many of us mistakenly view the present as a mere point in time—a fleeting second that slips away as soon as we acknowledge it. But what can we truly do with such a transient concept?
Instead, consider the present as a span of time, encompassing days, weeks, or even years. It is defined by your current circumstances, habits, and routines—the cumulative result of all your prior choices leading to this moment.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Process of Change
Change may occur in an instant, but its effects unfold over time. For instance, the decision to relocate or make significant life changes is not instantaneous; it’s a journey that develops through multiple cycles. Some changes can happen quickly, while others require a longer buildup.
A cycle represents your present existence. It encapsulates the life you choose to live, the work you pursue, and the relationships you foster. When discontent arises within your current cycle, that’s when the energy for change begins to stir. However, you must actively engage with that energy.
Section 1.2: Nurturing the Flow of Change
You have to consciously (or subconsciously) invest effort into following the current that begins to flow through your life. Resist the urge to obstruct it. This flow is life responding to your desires; it’s energizing to take small steps and decide to follow that energy wherever it leads you.
Your journey doesn’t end with this energy; it comes with a price. The toll represents what you are prepared to leave behind to reach your next destination—be it a place, friendships, or an entire way of life.
Chapter 2: The Nature of Choices
People often claim that you can’t have it all, but I beg to differ. You can, but not all at once. Each choice you make opens new doors while closing others. When you are grounded, you can navigate between different paths and experiences, as no door remains closed forever.
The first video, "Embrace the Now: The Importance of Being Present | Mike Robbins," highlights the significance of living in the moment, emphasizing how it enriches our lives.
The second video, "How To Embrace the Present Moment and Stop Living in Your Head," provides practical strategies for cultivating mindfulness and staying anchored in the present.
Conclusion
The life you currently lead defines your present, which can span days, weeks, or months. While a calm mind is crucial for maximizing this experience, it is not the sole requirement. The present is your ongoing journey, the path you carve for your life. Viewing it merely as a fleeting moment diminishes its potential to bestow its many gifts.
Change is the only constant in life. Each day, I learn to navigate this vast sea, welcoming it as an old friend rather than an adversary.
