Recently, I undertook an experiment where I treated four days as if I were on holiday, aiming to capture the joy and excitement reminiscent of a month-long journey in a foreign land. My objective was to determine if adopting a vacation mentality could truly enrich my everyday existence.

Vacations often bring about a distinct array of positive emotions and perspectives. This led me to ponder: Could I replicate these uplifting feelings in my daily life? Research suggests that our vacation-related emotions are largely influenced by our mindset. Thus, the challenge arose: How can I incorporate more of that vacation mindset into my daily routine?

Inspired by Ashley Williams' book “Time Smart,” which emphasizes how a shift in mindset can profoundly affect well-being, I decided to embark on this journey. One study referenced in the book involved participants treating an upcoming weekend like a holiday. The findings were intriguing; those who adopted this vacation-like mindset reported greater happiness, lower stress levels, and higher satisfaction compared to those who viewed it as just another weekend.

Here are some practical adjustments I made over the span of four days to infuse my life with a vacation-like mentality:

While cultivating strong relationships is essential, studies show that interactions with acquaintances or strangers can significantly enhance happiness. Striking up conversations with new people—whether it’s a barista, a fellow traveler, or through apps designed for socializing—can foster a sense of community and boost your mood.
