Embracing the Gothic: My Journey into YouTube and Self-Discovery

Chapter 1: My First Steps into YouTube
In September 2020, I launched my first video, marking the beginning of my channel, Alice In Gothic Land, where I aimed to share my passion for Gothic literature. Although I was advised to prepare a script, the urge to constantly read from it proved to be a challenge. While I managed to present my ideas well, relying on notes created a sense of false security.
The overall experience was quite daunting, and I often felt vulnerable in front of the camera, which sometimes made me appear rigid. For a good laugh, you can check out that initial video.
As time went on, I began to identify as an English teacher deeply interested in 18th and 19th-century Gothic literature. Over the past sixteen months, I have transformed from a teacher and Gothic writer to what some writers now call a "Confidence Builder" (Noah Watry) and "A Shiner" (Tracy Fahey).
Section 1.1: Lessons from My Early Videos
Reflecting on my first video, I recognize several mistakes that can offer guidance to others. The initial error was referring to my channel as a blog, stemming from a course I was taking at the time. Though my intentions were clear, I mixed up the platforms I aimed to utilize.
I also felt stiff in front of the camera. After years of teaching English as a second language, I was overly concerned about sounding "standard" or "proper." Despite having a neutral accent, the fact that English is not my first language was still apparent. As my videos progressed, I became more relaxed and embraced my acquired northern English pronunciation, which some may find amusing.
Subsection 1.1.1: Embracing My Accent
Your Foreign Accent Can Play Wonderfully in Your Favor
Create your unique personal brand to stand out from the crowd.
Initially, I mistakenly believed that viewers would flock to my channel, including critics. In reality, I did not encounter either. While some claim that critics can boost your audience, I prefer to distance myself from negativity. I believe that constructive criticism is essential for growth, and fostering a supportive community is vital.
Section 1.2: Adapting Content for a Bilingual Audience
Since my channel operates in two languages, replicating content can be challenging, particularly during interviews. However, I have plans to address this issue this year, ensuring content is accessible to both audiences. If you're interested in upcoming developments, consider subscribing for notifications about my latest videos.
Chapter 2: My Evolution and Growing Confidence
The most significant change has been my shift towards a more niche-oriented approach, focusing on how Gothic elements can guide individuals in their journeys. While this specificity is essential, it sometimes feels constraining and stifles my creativity.

I have learned to communicate more authentically. Initially, I aimed to portray myself as an overly educated individual, but my students noted that I sounded overly serious and disconnected from my true self. Their feedback helped me realize the importance of sharing my personal opinions, making my content more relatable.
While it was challenging to speak to an empty room, I began to visualize conversing with one of my favorite people, which helped me connect better with my audience. As a teacher, I thrive on interaction and engagement, so this mental shift has been pivotal.
Section 2.1: Personal and Professional Growth
The journey has been rewarding both personally and professionally. I have become more confident discussing Gothic literature, stepped outside my comfort zone, and learned to utilize new tools, including SEO. I have followers from diverse backgrounds and have developed clearer goals for my journey. Additionally, I've formed meaningful friendships offline and received collaboration offers for various projects.
