Unlocking Creativity Through Untime: A New Approach

Chapter 1: Embracing Untime in Creative Processes
For many years, I treated my creative writing as a chore that needed to be completed within strict time constraints. With the demands of school, work, and family, creativity had to fit into my hectic life, often relegated to brief moments of free time. While I managed to produce several short stories, screenplays, and even three novels, I realized that something essential was missing.
That missing element was a gentle connection with my subconscious. Whenever an idea sparked, I would rush to put it into writing, rarely allowing myself the luxury of exploring those thoughts in a relaxed manner.
Untime Defined
Untime is the concept of time without deadlines or obligations. Unlike traditional time, where you might feel the weight of unfinished tasks, untime offers a peaceful respite in your schedule. It's a moment where you can be alone, free from distractions, and focus on whatever you desire.
This is the perfect opportunity to experiment with ideas. So, how can you engage with these ideas, mentally or otherwise?
When you allow yourself to relax and detach from daily stressors, your subconscious can reveal a wealth of creativity. The ideas that surface can relate to various aspects of your life, whether it's writing, personal challenges, or new projects. You might find yourself reminiscing about childhood stories, confronting past traumas, or considering new interests and acquaintances.
Capturing Ideas
To truly benefit from untime, keep a journal handy. Jot down your thoughts and memories without judgment or the need to elaborate. Just write down what comes to you as you navigate your day.
Untime Activities
Untime doesn’t mean doing nothing. It can be incredibly productive, especially when you focus on a creative project without the pressure of a deadline. Personally, I cherish the early hours before my family and work commitments kick in. During this quiet time, I write morning pages, journal about ongoing projects, and make progress on my main creative endeavors.
Whether it's a novel, a website, or a blog, I embrace this period of relaxed productivity. Switching between tasks is welcomed, and ideas flow freely as I engage in this calm form of "work."
Red Flags to Watch For
If your early mornings turn into a race against the clock—striving to meet word counts or deadlines—then you're likely losing the essence of untime. While it’s perfectly okay to accomplish tasks outside of untime, be aware that these moments lack the tranquility of true untime. Reflect on whether you need more of it in your life.
Finding Your Untime
Everyone's untime looks different. For me, now that my children are adults, I can enjoy the quiet before my day begins. You might find early mornings work for you, but ensure you're getting enough rest by going to bed earlier. Alternatively, you could carve out time in the evening once everyone else has settled down or perhaps find a peaceful spot at the library after work.
Discover your untime; it might feel aimless at first, but it could transform into your favorite part of the day.
