# Mind Cafe's Current Status: A Semi-Hiatus Explained
Written on
Chapter 1: Understanding Mind Cafe's Silence
You may have noticed a lack of communication from Mind Cafe, one of Medium's leading platforms focused on self-improvement, mindfulness, and happiness. You're not alone; many writers have reported similar experiences, with no feedback—even rejections—coming their way. This prompted me to investigate the situation, piecing together the reasons behind this quiet period.
This paragraph will result in an indented block of text, typically used for quoting other text.
Section 1.1: Changes in Mind Cafe's Leadership
As many are aware, Adrian Drew is the owner of Mind Cafe. While he continues to oversee operations, the publication no longer has the same team it once did. Previously, there was a dedicated (paid) staff, including notable names like Reed, Jordan Gross, and Jon Hawkins. Adrian has acknowledged that "a lot has changed since then, and the resources we once had are no longer available."
Subsection 1.1.1: The End of Partnership with Medium
Mind Cafe used to have an official partnership with Medium, but this collaboration ended last summer. The loss of Medium’s support and funding led many publications, like P.S. I Love You and The Ascent, to exit the platform. Adrian commented on the current challenges, stating, "We’re still doing our best to keep things running, which is no small feat. But we do it for you. And we don’t make a penny."
Section 1.2: The Role of Bryan Dijkhuizen
A few months ago, Bryan Dijkhuizen took on the role of Submission Manager at Mind Cafe. Many writers, including my friends and writing students, were curious about the lack of feedback and issues with the submission form. Since Bryan assumed this position, significant improvements have been made. He plays a crucial role in managing the submission process, so congratulations to Bryan on this important appointment!
Chapter 2: Current Submission Status
As it stands, Mind Cafe is currently on a semi-hiatus. The submission box is temporarily closed, a significant shift from its long-standing openness to new contributions. Aspiring writers who have not yet been published by Mind Cafe will need to be patient, while existing authors can still pitch new ideas.
Bryan has recently made time to review submissions and has published several, including mine.
Section 2.1: Future of Submissions
The good news is that once Adrian and Bryan get everything sorted, they plan to reopen submissions. Adrian assures, "The door will open again soon, I can assure you, and we’ll welcome many hundreds of you with open arms." I’ll keep you updated on any developments.
