# Leaders: Inspire Your Team to Persevere and Embrace Resilience

Chapter 1: The Wisdom of Stoicism
What does it mean to engage with philosophy? At its core, it involves equipping ourselves for the challenges that lie ahead. As noted by Epictetus, if we prepare ourselves to endure hardships, we can face any situation that arises. He compares this to a boxer who doesn't exit the ring after taking a few hits. While leaving the ring has no real consequences, abandoning the quest for wisdom yields no benefits.
When confronted with challenges, how should we respond? Epictetus would advocate for a mindset of resilience, stating, "This is what I’ve trained for; this is my discipline!"
Epictetus is one of my most esteemed mentors. He embodies the spirit of an inspirational coach you might find in a classic 90s Disney film. His teachings remind us that giving up after the first obstacle is absurd. Yet, in our daily lives, we often do just that. When difficulties arise, we tend to make excuses or quit. Philosophy acts as mental training that equips us to handle adversity. While some argue that philosophy teaches us how to live, the Stoics assert that it offers lessons on how to confront our mortality—"Memento Mori."
When life knocks you down, rise and try again. This isn’t just a clichéd motivational mantra; it's a principle I instill in my son daily. When he first attempted to walk, he stumbled and cried. But instead of telling him to remain on all fours, I encouraged him to stand up and try once more. Today, we began learning the trumpet. Although his first attempt produced an amusing sound, we'll continue to practice tomorrow and the day after that.
As a leader, it's crucial to foster an environment where your team feels safe to make mistakes and learn from them. This process is essential for mastering any skill. The term "encourage" literally means "to give courage," which is rooted in the word for heart (cœur in French). Therefore, to encourage is to instill the heart to try again and persist against odds.
Reflect on this: every success story is often preceded by challenges—unless, of course, it stems from an inheritance.
