How My Daughter's Felt Slippers Became a Lesson in Earning
Written on
Chapter 1: Teaching Value Through Work
In my parenting approach, I avoid spoiling my children. Instead of purchasing toys, I prefer to take them on daily nature walks. Occasionally, I might buy them useful items like crayons or a dictionary. However, just yesterday, I decided to treat my 4.5-year-old daughter to a lovely pair of pink unicorn felt slippers.
There are two key reasons behind this decision:
Reason 1: Addressing a Practical Need
My daughter shares my condition of hyperhidrosis, which causes excessive sweating of the palms and soles. To manage her sweaty palms, she uses a handkerchief. Our upstairs area is carpeted, which poses a challenge for those with moist feet. Sweat can create an uncomfortable itch and lead to mold on the carpet. To avoid these issues, I wear socks with my felt slippers, which keeps my feet dry and free from irritation. Recently, my daughter expressed that she too was experiencing itchiness, prompting me to suggest wearing socks and offering to buy her some felt slippers. She was overjoyed at the idea!
Reason 2: Earning Her Reward
The more significant reason for purchasing the slippers is that she actually earned them! Our conversations often spark ideas for stories, and I've even published a collection titled "Ewe and Lambs," which features anecdotes inspired by her clever remarks and actions. She deserves a portion of the earnings from these stories, and the slippers were bought with her own earned money. This experience brought her immense joy.
I hope this positive reinforcement encourages her to value intelligence and understand the dignity that comes from work.
