Freelancing Truths: Insights Beyond the Hype

The Realities of Freelancing
The allure of freelancing has gained immense popularity recently. It's often portrayed in a simplistic manner: "Work whenever, wherever!" Many envision a lifestyle where they can earn substantial income by working just a few hours a week, lounging on their couch in pajamas while pursuing personal passions.
However, the reality is that, while some individuals experience that kind of success, it often requires significant time and effort to achieve. For the majority, the journey is much more intricate.
Having embarked on my freelancing journey in 2020, I can attest to the challenges and rewards it brings. Initially, I believed it would be simpler than a traditional 9-to-5 job. The idea of generating my own content and publishing as I pleased seemed like a surefire way to boost my income. I assumed that every effort would yield a corresponding reward.
If you are new to freelancing and feeling like you're on top of the world, or if you're struggling and questioning your future in this field, this guide is for you. Here are four truths about freelancing that are often overlooked.
1. Choosing the Right Platform Matters
If only we could all simply set up our own websites and profit from our writing! Unfortunately, that’s not feasible for most. A significant number of freelancers rely on various platforms to showcase their work and connect with clients. From my experience, the platform you choose can profoundly impact your career trajectory, determining both your earnings and audience reach.
I have explored numerous platforms, such as Vocal, which operates similarly to Medium but has a different payment structure and allows reader tips. I’ve also tried Fiverr for offering services like writing and editing, participated in writing contests, and worked with Medium. To be candid, despite my efforts across these platforms, Medium has provided me with the most substantial returns. While my success on Medium has fluctuated, the hard work I invest there has at least yielded some benefits. Other ventures, however, have not been as fruitful. If you’re starting out in freelancing, experiment with different platforms and dedicate your efforts to the one that suits you best.
2. Income Can Be Unpredictable
When I mention that I freelance for an online magazine (Medium), I often hear enthusiastic responses. However, the inevitable follow-up question is about my earnings. The truth is, my income is directly linked to my audience's engagement with my content, which can be quite unpredictable.
Publishing at an inopportune time or writing about topics that don't resonate with my audience can lead to lower engagement and, consequently, reduced earnings. My success hinges on audience interaction, meaning that sometimes, despite my hard work, the financial outcomes may not align. It’s a reality of this industry that I’ve learned to accept over time.
3. Consistency Is Crucial
Many view freelancing as a carefree side gig, where they can work whenever it suits them without adhering to a structured work ethic. The truth is more nuanced: freelancing thrives on consistency. If I wrote sporadically, only when I felt the need for extra income, I would likely earn very little and struggle to build a loyal audience.
To succeed, maintaining a regular writing schedule is essential. You don’t have to produce an article daily, but establishing a routine and setting achievable goals will help you gain traction. Frequent long breaks without content can hinder your growth.
4. Finding Purpose Beyond Financial Gain
One of the most surprising aspects of freelancing is the sense of purpose it can provide. I’ve always aspired to turn writing into a career and develop an audience that appreciates my work. Initially, I doubted my abilities as a writer, but freelancing has transformed that perspective.
I now identify as a writer, and while my freelancing income doesn't cover all my bills, it is an integral part of my professional life. Writing daily and gaining experience in this field has been a gift, instilling in me a sense of belonging and purpose. You have a story to tell, too.
In summary, these four truths about freelancing are often overlooked in discussions about this career path. While it may not be as straightforward as it seems for many, the rewards can be substantial.
If you’re thriving as a freelancer, whether financially or emotionally, keep up the good work and remain consistent. If you’re feeling stuck or are just starting, remember to value your capabilities. Success is on the horizon.
For those contemplating freelancing, I encourage you to take the leap. You have nothing to lose and potentially much to gain from this incredible journey.
