Verizon 5G Preparedness for Super Bowl LVII: A Game Changer
Written on
Chapter 1: Verizon's 5G Commitment
As the nation gears up for the Super Bowl, excitement is palpable, especially as it marks a significant return to large-scale public sports events post-Omicron. Verizon seized this moment to highlight its extensive 5G capabilities and readiness. They welcomed a select group of media and analysts, including myself, to tour their state-of-the-art 5G lab and command center in Los Angeles. This experience provided invaluable insights into Verizon’s dedication and a preview of the future of 5G technology.
Section 1.1: Super Bowl Preparedness
SoFi Stadium, hosting this year’s Super Bowl, ranks among the most technologically advanced venues globally. Verizon has invested years into enhancing stadium connectivity, resulting in comprehensive mmWave coverage and an expenditure exceeding $119 million to ensure robust 5G service in and around the venue, utilizing its newly acquired C-band spectrum.
Verizon has installed 169 new small cells, four macro cell sites, and 24 in-building systems to handle the substantial traffic from excited fans. "We are prepared," asserted Philip French, VP of Network Engineering, during our tour of the bustling command center located near LAX International Airport.
The network is also reinforced in key locations where fans will gather, such as hotels, restaurants, and bars. Philip added that Verizon’s command center will operate around the clock, monitoring network performance closely and maintaining communication with public safety agencies.
Section 1.2: Enhancing the Fan Experience
One standout feature resulting from Verizon’s significant investment is the "Multi-View" option that elevates the viewing experience for attendees. This feature allows fans to access up to seven different camera angles, instant replays, and augmented reality overlays displaying NFL statistics—enhancements that may not even be available on the stadium's jumbotron, all at the touch of a button on their smartphones.
Delivering Multi-View to a large audience without delays necessitates immense capacity and minimal latency. Brian Mecum, VP of Device Technology, passionately explained how the implementation of 5G mmWave technology, supported by C-band, makes this possible. Multi-View is accessible through the NFL Ticketholder app and compatible with select new 5G smartphones.
Chapter 2: Public Safety Innovations
Verizon also presented its suite of public safety solutions, notably the Tactical Humanitarian Operations Response (THOR) vehicle—a mobile 5G command center designed for rapid response in emergencies. THOR features a 5G Ultra Wideband Private Network with satellite backhaul, providing essential services during crises.
Among the showcased technologies were mobile cell sites, 4G and Wi-Fi service trailers, and vehicle-mounted Mobile Edge Compute (MEC) systems, all designed to maintain connectivity even if traditional fiber backhaul fails. Many of these solutions are set to be deployed during the Super Bowl.
Section 2.1: Envisioning the Future at the 5G Lab
The tour concluded at Verizon's 5G lab, where innovative 5G experiences are envisioned and developed. Lab Director Christian Guirnalda shared insights into how Verizon collaborates with various partners to bring these concepts to life. Demonstrations included immersive entertainment, connected venues, and cashier-less shopping experiences, all powered by 5G and MEC technology.
Christian emphasized that while 5G connectivity is crucial, Verizon is committed to creating a comprehensive ecosystem to deliver end-to-end solutions, particularly for enterprise customers. This approach contrasts with the 4G era, where over-the-top (OTT) services dominated, relegating cellular operators to mere data providers.
The video titled "Super Bowl LVII (57) Commercial: Verizon - Next Season Starts Now (2023)" illustrates Verizon's innovative strategies and technological advancements.
In conclusion, the visit was enlightening, revealing Verizon's readiness for the Super Bowl and its commitment to providing an engaging 5G experience for attendees. It also showcased Verizon's forward-thinking approach to extending 5G applications beyond smartphones and broadband into various industries. The results of their preparations will soon be evident!
