Entrepreneurship involves not only the creation of one’s own enterprise but also the innovation of business practices and the astute evaluation of opportunities.

While many aspire to be their own bosses, only a select few manage to reach the summit of success through original ideas. So, what are the secrets to becoming a successful entrepreneur? Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu, the President of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey, offers invaluable insights, especially aimed at empowering youth and women to take initiative in business. He emphasizes, "The first condition is to dream; everything begins with a dream. A person without dreams is akin to a bird without wings, lost and despondent. Therefore, the most fundamental rule is to have a vision."

The second essential element is setting a goal. A dream is wonderful, but without transforming it into a specific goal, progress is nearly impossible. For instance, when a young child is asked about their future aspirations, their responses often reflect clear objectives. Whether they claim they want to be a lawyer, a police officer, or a doctor, their ambitions illustrate that dreams and goals know no bounds. Another crucial principle is diligence. Consider who has achieved success without dedicated effort. Nothing materializes on its own in life; think about the determination required to learn to walk, read, or write. Additionally, it’s vital to embrace the idea of failure; patience is necessary. Individuals may stumble and rise again, reflecting on their setbacks rather than surrendering. When a project is ready and one possesses courage, intelligence, and an entrepreneurial spirit, but lacks financial backing, it’s crucial to recognize that support systems like state partnerships and TOBB provide funding opportunities for entrepreneurs with limited capital. Furthermore, Turkey has a network of venture capitalists, incubators, and angel investors who are eager to support budding entrepreneurs.

However, we must also acknowledge the unique realities in Turkey. The Life Satisfaction Survey indicates a decline in youth optimism, dropping from 83.9% in 2013 to 78% in 2014, reflecting a growing sense of hopelessness. If we equate a generation lacking hope with a generation devoid of dreams, we may be facing a future hesitant to take risks. More than a lack of funding, we see a deficit of innovative ideas; few individuals are presenting fresh concepts or thinking outside the box. To compete globally, we must focus on generating ideas and fostering innovation.

In Europe, entrepreneurship courses lay the groundwork for young individuals to embark on their business journeys before graduating. Many European youth successfully implement their course projects into real-life ventures and earn a livelihood from them. Why can’t the same happen here? If we have the potential, we should aim to multiply our entrepreneurial efforts. Change in education can lead to a shift in mindset, ultimately propelling Turkey forward. If we aspire for a more entrepreneurial Turkey, we must nurture new ideas while they are still flourishing.
