Transform Your Podcasts Into Engaging Articles in 5 Steps

Chapter 1: The Power of Repurposing Content
Creating compelling articles from your podcast episodes can significantly expand your reach and influence. For instance, on January 11th, I shared my most successful article titled "How to Make $17,000 a Month Passive Income from Udemy Courses," which has generated $1,105.88 from 37,000 views, with an average reading time of three minutes. This success stems from insights provided by one of my podcast guests, Louise Croft, a seasoned course creator with over 40 courses on Udemy since 2014. Remarkably, I drafted the initial version in just two hours.
Given that my podcast focuses on entrepreneurship, I've frequently transformed episodes into articles, publishing in platforms like Entrepreneur's Handbook. Other notable articles include "Building a Million-Dollar Amazon FBA Business" and "How 24-Year-Olds Attract Major Brand Collaborations."
To help you navigate this process, here are five effective steps to convert your podcast episodes into attention-grabbing articles.
Section 1.1: Start with Accurate Transcription
The first step involves transcribing your audio content. I recommend using Rev.com, which leverages AI to provide automated transcriptions at a cost of $0.25 per minute, typically ready within five minutes. For example, a thirty-minute podcast would cost $7.50. I've found their transcriptions to be quite precise.
To begin, create an account and upload your audio, or simply paste the URL of your published podcast. Rev will process the audio and provide a price estimate. Once you approve it and enter your payment details, you'll receive an email notification once the transcription is complete. The final file also distinguishes between speakers, simplifying the content repurposing.
Note: I have no affiliation with Rev.com; I just find their services incredibly beneficial.
Section 1.2: Edit with Precision and Highlight Key Lessons
Facing a blank page can be daunting, as Jodi Picoult aptly stated, “you can’t edit a blank page.” However, repurposing audio means you already have content to work from. The real challenge lies in distilling the material to its core messages.
I usually outline the article structure first, then extract quotes from my podcast guest to illustrate five key points. The process becomes one of weaving a narrative, adding an introduction and conclusion. After writing the first draft of the Udemy article in two hours, I set it aside for a couple of days. Returning with fresh eyes, I edited for typos and clarity over several mornings. I also consulted Louise for her input before finalizing and submitting it to Entrepreneur's Handbook, which altogether took five days.
If editing isn't your strength, consider hiring someone who enjoys it or seek feedback from friends. At the very least, using a tool like Grammarly is advisable.
Subsection 1.2.1: Infuse Personal Experiences for Impact
Incorporating your personal stories can add depth to your articles, although this can be challenging. In my three and a half months on Medium, I noticed a lack of well-researched articles about generating passive income through Udemy. The few I found were vague and unhelpful, prompting me to create something more substantial using my own experiences and insights from Louise.
Section 1.3: Craft Compelling Headlines
The headline is critical to your article's success. As highlighted in a New Yorker article, headlines can shape our perceptions of content. For instance, "How to Make $17,000 a Month in Passive Income from Udemy Courses" is straightforward and enticing, offering a clear value proposition.
In contrast, a headline like "How I Made $305.13 from My First Udemy Course in 12 Days" may have strong content but lacks the broader appeal, often resulting in limited engagement. Editors have consistently emphasized the importance of numbers in headlines, which capture attention and organize information effectively. As marketer Neil Patel notes, numbers serve as "brain candy," attracting readers' interest.
Section 1.4: Timing Your Submissions
Submitting your articles at the right time can influence their visibility. Aim to submit your work on a Thursday or Friday evening, increasing the chances of publication by Monday. This timing allows editors time to review and request adjustments. Additionally, Mondays are ideal for launching articles, as they can gain momentum throughout the week.
While I was fortunate to publish early in January—when people are eager for positive changes—this strategy can be particularly effective for those targeting large publications. As Shawn Forno points out, top-tier publications can significantly boost your readership.

Since starting on Medium, I’ve committed to writing daily for an hour. My initial articles were far from perfect, but the feedback from editors helped me refine my approach.
