Three Remarkable Practices of Highly Spiritual Individuals

Written on

Chapter 1: Introduction to Spiritual Practices

The journey of spirituality often leads us to discover unique habits that enrich our lives. In my experience, I've encountered inspiring individuals who embody these practices, particularly during my time in a convent where my mother worked as a caregiver for retired clergy.

Section 1.1: The Influence of Reading

During my visits to the convent, I met numerous nuns who had dedicated their lives to faith and service. Surprisingly, they all had a passion for reading that extended beyond sacred texts.

Spiritual reading materials

These women, aged between 70 and 100, possessed an eclectic mix of books covering topics such as history, philosophy, and psychology. They often explored multiple perspectives by reading various authors on the same subject.

One nun shared a thought-provoking perspective about mind expansion. She said, “If you decide to explore altered states of consciousness, ensure you’ve read extensively; it enhances the experience.” Although she never openly acknowledged any personal experience with drugs, her wisdom about the importance of a cultivated mind was evident.

Ultimately, engaging with literature is foundational for spiritual growth. As Ram Dass aptly put it, “Information is just bits of data. Knowledge is putting them together. Wisdom is transcending them.”

Section 1.2: The Art of Letter Writing

Another striking habit among the nuns was their commitment to handwritten correspondence.

Sister Angustias often remarked, “Writing is the best way to think.” Her belief was that writing brings several advantages:

  1. It prevents impulsive communication, which can lead to misunderstandings.
  2. It sharpens reasoning skills.
  3. Writing serves as a filter, allowing clarity of thought.
  4. It can diminish ego, as it exposes flaws in reasoning.
  5. Writing often reveals insights previously unknown to the writer.
  6. It helps identify limitations in understanding.
  7. Reviewing one’s own writing fosters an emotional connection to thoughts.
  8. It encourages connections between diverse ideas.
  9. It enhances communication effectiveness, as readers interpret text with their own voice.
  10. It allows for a deeper observation of one’s own consciousness.

Sister Angustias would often emphasize, “Those who do not write lead superficial lives.” While her words might seem harsh, they hold a profound truth. Writing clarifies thoughts and helps one cut through mental clutter.

“If you can’t explain it simply, you haven’t understood it well.” — Albert Einstein.

Chapter 2: The Meaning of Work

Contrary to the common misconception that nuns live solely contemplative lives, they are deeply engaged in practical tasks. They partake in various communal activities such as cooking, cleaning, and providing support to those in need, referring to these efforts as “Sanctifying work.”

I once saw a nun joyfully sweeping the floor and asked her about her cheerful demeanor. She replied, “When a nun performs any task, no matter how trivial, she does it for her Lord. That intention fills me with joy.”

Through my experiences at the convent, it became clear that each action—be it gardening, cooking, or helping others—was infused with spirituality. They practiced their faith through their work. As St. Josemaría Escrivá said, “Your work is your prayer.”
