Strange New Note-Taking Approach: WhatsApp for Messaging Yourself
Written on
Chapter 1: The Note-Taking Landscape
In today's digital age, there is an abundance of note-taking applications, each offering a unique set of features. Some popular examples include:
- Evernote: While often considered overpriced, it remains a go-to for many users.
- Microsoft OneNote
- Craft
- Obsidian
- Simplenote
- Joplin
- Goodnotes
- Apple Notes: Excellent for those within the Apple ecosystem.
- Google Keep: Simple yet effective.
- Drafts: Exclusive to Apple, but highly praised.
- Bear: Another Apple-centric option.
The options are virtually limitless, which raises the question: why introduce another note-taking tool?
Let's not dwell on that. The market can certainly accommodate new players striving to innovate. One of these newcomers is attempting to carve out a niche in a rather unexpected way.

Chapter 2: WhatsApp's Surprising Feature
WhatsApp, the messaging app under Meta, has recently added a feature that allows users to send messages to themselves. But why would anyone choose a messaging platform for note-taking?
I find it perplexing. This seems like a rather impractical use of WhatsApp (or any messaging service for that matter).
However, to maintain a balanced perspective, I recognize that this feature may appeal to individuals who prefer using WhatsApp and are disinterested in traditional note-taking applications.
I've experimented with this approach; my critique is not without personal experience. For those who regularly engage with the app, it could serve as a convenient medium to jot down thoughts and ideas.
There is a notable downside: as new messages from contacts arrive, your notes will gradually get pushed down the list and may eventually become overlooked. To combat this, you'll need to pin your own contact to ensure visibility at the top of the chat.
I can't help but wonder, is there a deeper purpose behind this feature? Am I overlooking its potential benefits? If anyone has insights, I would appreciate the clarification!
