Chapter 1: The Digital Renaissance and Its Discontents

I recently delivered a presentation at a college discussing how we have wasted the potential of a networked society by prioritizing cloud-based intellectual property over genuine connections with people. During the question-and-answer session, a student asked why I appeared so negative about the digital future. I was taken aback because, despite my concerns, my continued engagement in writing, speaking, and podcasting reflects my belief that we can still make meaningful changes.

Contrary to being a pessimist, I am often viewed as overly optimistic. I was among the early advocates for the digital renaissance and its promise to unlock the vast possibilities of collective human creativity. This renaissance encompassed a wide range of ideas, from chaos theory and quantum physics to fantasy role-playing and the Gaia hypothesis. We envisioned a world where humanity, more interconnected than ever, could shape any future we desired. The internet was seen as a transformative force for society, akin to the effects of LSD on an individual.

However, the narrative shifted when Wired magazine and Wall Street investors began framing the internet as a lucrative business venture, dubbing it the "Long Boom." They claimed that digital technology would lead to endless exponential economic growth.

Instead of creating technologies that advance human evolution, we developed tools to extract market value from individuals and communities. Nature does not support endless growth; only cancer follows this path, ultimately destroying its host. Our technological advancements have made people less creative and more predictable, fostering addiction and compliance rather than innovation.

We have become users of technology that, in turn, manipulates us. Each time we interact with our smartphones, they learn more about us, while we become less informed about their workings. Social media, which could have been a platform for fostering collaboration, instead focuses on harvesting our data, categorizing us, and filling our feeds with content designed to reinforce our behavioral profiles. Leading academic institutions are now teaching "captology" and behavior design—studies aimed at making individuals dependent on devices and redirecting their actions.

Humans are being "auto-tuned," with anything outside of the expected parameters labeled as "noise." Yet, this unconventional behavior and paradoxical thinking—this is where the true signal lies. This is our essence.

Team Human—my book, podcast, and the larger movement—is a declaration of our intent to reclaim our humanity in the digital age. It is a manifesto advocating not against digital technology, but rather for redefining what it means to be human and integrating that essence into our digital future.

The first step in this journey is to recognize that being human is a collective effort. We possess the advantage of our physical reality, and we must strive to engage with one another beyond our screens.

Rather than tailoring humans to fit technology, we should prioritize shaping technology to serve a human-centered future.
