Finding Balance with a Deck of Cards: A Mindful Journey

Chapter 1: The Power of Cards for Mindfulness
Allow me to share something that may initially seem unconventional but carries genuine psychological value. About two decades ago, an Indian friend introduced me to a fascinating tool called the Osho Zen Tarot. He directed me to a website where I could draw a card, each featuring a stunning image paired with insightful commentary.
Unlike traditional tarot decks, which I never really grasped, I found the unique blend of simplicity and depth in these cards captivating. My intention wasn't to predict the future or perform any mystical rituals; rather, I discovered that the combination of visual art and philosophical text prompted me to reflect on my life and sometimes provided the motivational push I needed to move forward.
I enjoyed the cards so much that I eventually purchased the physical deck, which came with a booklet containing the accompanying texts. However, after losing the pack during a house move, I opted for the convenience of an app on my phone. Now, several times each week, I randomly draw a card, ponder the imagery, read the text, and allow it to resonate with me.
This practice offers me a tranquil escape from the relentless pace of modern life, characterized by information overload, tight schedules, constant communication, and the pressure to meet social media expectations. The Osho Zen Tarot serves as my refuge. On days when I feel too exhausted to meditate or lack the time for a lengthy journal entry, I simply open the app, draw a card, and receive immediate psychological support. Some may interpret this as spiritual support, though I understand that the term carries different connotations for different individuals.
I often ask my partner if he would like me to draw a card for him when I sense he’s feeling overwhelmed or stressed. He consistently agrees, and there have been instances where the messages have moved him to tears. While your experience may differ, I encourage you to explore this practice and see how it resonates with you.
The psychological benefit of using tarot cards stems from the concept of archetypes.
Section 1.1: Understanding Archetypes
Archetypes are universal symbols and ideas embedded in our subconscious, found in myths, dreams, art, and narratives. The tarot employs various archetypes—such as the Hermit, the Fool, the Magician, the High Priestess, and the Empress—to offer guidance and insights into navigating life’s experiences meaningfully. Rather than a tool for divination, tarot serves as a means to delve into our subconscious and connect with our inner wisdom. Engaging with archetypes and reflecting on the tarot's messages can lead to greater self-awareness and improved decision-making.
Subsection 1.1.1: Tarot Availability
Currently, the cards may no longer be accessible for free online, but you can purchase the app from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store for £6.99. The physical deck, along with its booklet, is also available on Amazon.
Chapter 2: A Favorite Reflection
The first video, "Card flies from deck. Full Moon Fever. Cards keep me sane," illustrates how card tricks can offer solace and mindfulness.
In the second video, "How to break in a deck of cards," viewers can learn effective methods to enhance their card-handling skills.
Let me leave you with one of my favorite images and passages from the Osho Zen Tarot deck:
Existence
This image depicts a figure seated on a lotus leaf, contemplating the beauty of the night sky. It conveys the message that “home” is not merely a physical location but an internal state of acceptance and relaxation. The stars, the trees, and all living beings are intertwined in this dance of life, a truth often forgotten as we chase our personal agendas and feel the need to compete for what we desire. Ultimately, our perception of separateness is an illusion created by the mind's narrow focus.
Now is the moment to assess whether you are embracing the profound gift of feeling “at home” wherever you find yourself. If you are, take the time to cherish that feeling so it can deepen within you. However, if you feel as though the world is against you, perhaps it's time to step outside and gaze at the stars.
