What's Next for the Mac Pro After the Mac Studio?

The Rise of the Mac Studio
The recently unveiled Mac Studio stands out as a powerhouse, encapsulated in a sleek and compact design. Although its internal components are diminutive, their performance is nothing short of remarkable.
The Mac Studio, equipped with the M1 Ultra chip, outperforms all other Macs in both benchmarks and real-world scenarios, outshining even the high-end MacBook Pros and iMac Pros.
With the introduction of such a formidable machine, one might wonder: what remains for the anticipated Mac Pro, which is expected to debut this summer or fall? There is, however, one crucial feature that the Mac Studio lacks.
Speculation suggests that the upcoming Mac Pro could be powered by the next-generation M2 chip. But even if that turns out to be true, how can it surpass the capabilities of the M1 Ultra?
In my view, the Mac Studio is deficient in one significant area essential for a professional desktop: modularity.
The Mac Pro's Potential Upgrades
I anticipate that the Mac Pro will be designed in a larger format, primarily due to its modular capabilities. While the Mac Studio excels with outstanding performance, leveraging an integrated System on Chip (SoC), RAM, and SSD all in one unit, the Mac Pro will allow for upgrades.
SoCs provide numerous advantages, including minimal lag and a compact footprint, yet they come with drawbacks, particularly the inability to enhance RAM or SSD capacity.
In contrast, the Mac Pro will facilitate both upgradeable RAM and interchangeable SSDs.
The Bottom Line
Users of the Mac Pro can expect an exciting refresh of Apple's most potent computer. It will likely feature a modular architecture, maintaining Apple's tradition of robust and thoughtfully designed systems, along with a variety of upgrade options. Consequently, it will carry a substantial price, likely doubling that of the M1 Ultra Mac Studio, which starts at $4000.
Given the pricing of previous Mac Pro models, which often reached $20,000, a price tag below $10,000 could be considered advantageous for professionals requiring such power and flexibility.
For the average user, however, the Mac Studio provides more than enough performance for a wide range of professional tasks.
