Journeying from America to Sri Lanka: Insights from Day 1
Written on
Chapter 1: Embracing Open-Mindedness
Traveling to countries with diverse ethnic backgrounds, languages, and cultures highlights the necessity of maintaining an "open mind." This mindset allows us to:
- Embrace differences
- Challenge our preconceived notions
- Sample foods we might initially dislike
- Acknowledge our ignorance
- Accept our mistakes
- Adjust to unexpected changes in plans
- Cultivate gratitude for all experiences: friends, food, the environment, and more
While many people casually reference the term "open-minded," practicing it can prove to be quite challenging. My journey in Sri Lanka has compelled me to confront my biases and resistance to change. Experiencing a country grappling with more significant challenges than my own has revealed my yearning for comfort, which I now see as somewhat trivial compared to the simplicity and ease that the locals enjoy.
Chapter 2: The Warmth of Sri Lanka
Despite the hardships currently faced by Sri Lanka, the hospitality I encountered was incredibly heartwarming. Traveling from developed nations to places experiencing difficulties has humbled me, allowing me to reassess my own ego.
With each journey to different countries, I find myself becoming more humble and open to new experiences. There is a vast world of knowledge awaiting exploration, but a closed mindset can hinder our growth. My travels through Western and Southeast Asia have broadened my understanding of varying cultures, traditions, and social norms. For instance, in countries like Thailand and Sri Lanka, sitting cross-legged in the presence of elders or in temples is considered inappropriate.
Being open-minded allows us to embrace unexpected experiences that enrich our lives.
