I was filled with optimism: “I have the ability to change my life for the better.” Self-improvement became my newfound sense of purpose.

However, self-improvement is not a true purpose in itself. It merely served as a temporary distraction from the emptiness I was feeling, rather than a remedy for it. As the results I sought began to elude me, my self-esteem took a hit. "Perhaps I'm just not cut out for this," I mused, which only exacerbated my negative feelings.
