AI Bots and the Future of Human Creativity: A Warning

Written on

Understanding the AI Threat

Greetings to all.

I want to take a moment to address the ongoing situation regarding AI and its supporters, as humanity is edging closer to addressing this issue decisively. The current level of intelligence exhibited by many in the AI community leaves much to be desired, yet it's sufficient for them to pilfer our work.

What’s happening, you ask? AI spambots and their allies are infiltrating our comment sections, leaving comments that resemble those of a sixth grader. Additionally, these bots are subscribing to our content and services without any genuine comprehension.

But why would AI or its followers engage in such laborious tasks, enduring a flood of content they can't grasp? The answer lies in a rather insidious strategy.

Some time ago, Tony conducted a survey asking if Medium sold user-generated content to AI corporations, would you:

  1. Appreciate it and return for more?
  2. Opt-out and miss out on extra traffic?
  3. Depart from Medium entirely?

For my part, I would choose to leave and dedicate my efforts to dismantling writing platforms.

Fortunately, that idea seems to have lost momentum. Efforts to discourage AI-generated content have increased, and human intervention through boosting nominations has positively impacted my earnings. How refreshing!

Furthermore, it appears that my subscriber count gets trimmed by approximately 15% at the end of each month, which I interpret as AI’s method of cleansing its presence from the platform. This is beneficial, as it prevents my views and earnings from being diluted by unwanted bots, and I can avoid the tiresome task of filtering out robotic comments that lack genuine insight into my work.

Yet, there’s something more alarming at play. Despite the seemingly positive influx of supportive comments and subscriber growth, I remain uneasy.

Why would I be concerned about a growing number of followers and comments that seem encouraging?

Here’s my reasoning:

  • If the commenters are bots, then AI has access to my work.
  • If, as I suspect, they’re humans utilizing AI for their responses (and doing so poorly), AI still gains access to my content.
  • If my subscribers are bots, AI can still access my creations.

Why is this a concern? Many reasons come to mind. This is my creative labor. I can’t monetize content off-platform. Google is already disincentivizing visits to my page. AI learns from my unique style and writing finesse.

It goes beyond the mere theft of my creations; it's an infringement upon my artistic essence. What implications does it have for art and artists if a bot can mimic my work to such an extent that the distinction becomes blurred?

To those who might one day wield power over us—quietly maneuvering behind the scenes—this is my message: We are fed up, and we will not tolerate this any longer. Consider yourselves warned.

That’s my story for today. If a solution exists, I'm certain someone else will discover it. For now, digital intelligence may be widely spread, but it can also be trimmed or entirely eradicated. Don't underestimate humanity; we are undeniably unpredictable (as the news often illustrates).

Farewell, cosmic wanderers.
